Did Ancient Greeks have an overt concept of 'conscience'?

Socrates was found guilty of the capital crime of 'inventing new gods,' but the god in question, his 'daimon,' closely resembles our concept of 'conscience.' is that what Socrates meant by his 'daimon,' or was he a victim of his own pretension?
