Why is it that we can remember things that happened a long time ago,but not things that happen recently.?

What part of the brain registers this if anyone knows. I just know that the hippocampus is located in the medial temporal lobe of the brain, and It belongs to the limbic system and plays important roles in the consolidation of information from short-term memory to long-term memory and spatial navigation.
