Why if Socrates existed is there so little evidence?

There is plenty of evidence that Socrates existed, with references in a range of contemporary authors. What is significantly less certain is whether the Socrates portrayed by Plato is the same as the Socrates who actually lived. Given that he was executed by the state, there is a good chance that the two don't quite marry up.
