What happened to Athens after Socrates died?

I'm doing a paper on how Socrates was a gadfly but I want to know what happened to Athens after his death?did they start to believe in what he was saying?did his followers/students go on to teach his philosophy?I'm so clueless right now.So whatever knowledge you have,please enlighten me...Thank you
